Salads at a barbecue

When you think of barbecues do you think of hamburgers, hotdogs, shish kebabs, chicken or fish on the grill? Whenever I smell barbecue that’s what I think about. That is changing for me.

This weekend at a barbecue with my family, I had a salad that was very tasty. It was fresh vegetables from the garden grown at their house. The tomatoes were some of the best I’ve ever tasted. The dressing was a simple vinaigrette. I also had another salad that had a citrus lime vinaigrette with spinach tomatoes and avocados. The tomatoes in this salad were surrounded by quinoa giving it an amazing texture. Finally the cucumbers cooled the whole salad down.

This reminded me of another fresh from the garden salad I had with Ginger, miso, and Dijon mustard dressing which in turn sparked a conversation. The variety of side dishes and salads that accompany barbecues is vast. It usually has fresh grown ingredients that are full of nutrients and cover a wide range of flavors.

From fruit salad, egg salad, potato salad, and vegetable salads you can be creative. Bringing in your own family background can change things up even more adding different flavors and fruits or vegetables to the sides and salads. The barbecue meat can almost become a side dish.

Have you been to a barbecue this summer? If not, what are you waiting for? Get some fresh from the garden vegetables, and add your favorite flavors or a family tradition taste to it. Then go and enjoy the flavors and conversations of a summer barbecue. Have a great day and a happy happy stomach.

Be well…it’s a state of mind.
